EXPRESSING REVERENCE IN OUR CELEBRATION OF THE EUCHARIST
THE LITURGY OF THE WORD OF GOD
During the readings, we are called to listen to the Word of God and to apply it to our lives. WE ARE TO STRIVE TO LET THE WORD CHANGE OUR LIVES! It is important to listen attentively --- carefully --- and actively to ALL the readings. It can also be useful to have read the readings to oneself before the beginning of Mass. It is recommended that, during the proclamation of the word during Mass, people listen to the lector and focus their attention to the lectern or pulpit from where the readings are proclaimed.
The Catholic LECTIONARY is the book from which the readings are proclaimed. The Sunday readings are proclaimed on a three year cycle. Currently, we are in cycle C. The first reading and the Gospel are usually intended to "connect" us to a single theme. The second reading, usually from a letter of St. Paul to the early churches, is meant to amplify how we are called to live the Christian life and sometimes connects with the other readings.
The homily is intended to give an explanation and a life application of the readings. Every priest tries to do his best! But the grace of God is given to "the listener" also. Instead of daydreaming or reading the parish bulletin or writing your check for the collection, one might reflect on how you would preach on the readings if you had the chance to do so.
The Liturgy of the Word concludes with the Prayers of Intercession (also known as the Prayers of the Faithful). These intentions are principally for the general petitions of the world-wide Church. However, during this time, every person should include their personal prayers in silence.
